La Quintana represents one of the greatest national historical reenactments, and is undoubtedly one of the most important equestrian rides, one of the many precious gems set among the green Umbrian hills. {:} {: En} The origins of Quintana date back to the Carnival of 1613, when a medieval joust took place in Foligno to solve a chivalric question regarding love, thus deciding "whether it was more appropriate for a knight of honor to show loyalty to his prince or to his beautiful and gentle lady". On February 10th 1613, the young descendants of noble families of Foligno challenged each other in Piazza Grande, thus creating the first Giostra della Quintana. The first edition of the modern format of Quintana was held in 1946; since then, each year in June Foligno's streets and squares plunge back in the splendid atmosphere of Baroque.
On the evening preceding the tournament, a long historical parade winds along the town alleys - people wearing rich, sumptuous Baroque costumes perfectly recreate the atmosphere of the 17th century. During the two weeks of Quintana, Foligno is lit by enthusiastic celebrations and cheerful crowds attend the ten taverns scattered all over the town, one for each of the quarters: here, tasty local Umbrian dishes are served together with typical delicacies from the 17th century.
On the tournament day, Campo de li Giochi becomes the richly decorated location for the Quintana joust. Here, the ten quarters line up their knights and horses, who will challenge themselves in a race along an eight-shaped 754m long track. Right in the center of the track, a statue of Mars, the Roman god of war, holds a ring and knights have to pass their spear through it. The track is covered for three times, and each time the ring gets smaller and smaller, passing from 8cm to 5cm. The joust is won by the fastest knight who committed no penalties.
The Quintana is one of the most important national historical revivals, and it is certainly one of the most important equestrian races, one of the many precious gems set among the green hills of Umbria.
The dimension de l'anneau se réduit à chaque tour: the passe de 8 cm, at 6cm jusqu'à 5 cm. The attribution du prix va au chevalier here term le parcours en mois de temps possible sans faire des erreurs.
La Quintana représente une des plus importantes évocations historiques nationales, et surtout est un des manèges équestres les plus intéressants: il est considéré un des plus beaux bijoux que l'Ombrie garde between ses collines. {:}
