"Umbria Jazz" is the most famous jazz festival at national level that every year, in the month of July since 1973, fills the squares of Perugia.
Since 1982, given the increase in participants, the rock genre, the blues, have also been involved, giving more and more attention to Italian jazz. There are two strands that are followed in the musical choices: an orthodox side and the other of black music, to the point of involving the pop-rock genre so much that in recent years there have been concerts by Eric Clapton, Elton John, Carlos Santana and Simply Red but also of Lady Gaga together with Tony Bennet and Mika, so as to have a greater participation of young people.
Some concerts take place in specific places in the city such as: the Santa Giuliana arena, the Morlacchi Theater, the Pavone Theater, in the church of San Francesco al Prato, in the National Gallery of Umbria and in the Cathedral of Perugia. The various free concerts take place in Piazza IV Novembre.
The success is due to having created an increasingly popular event from a neglected musical genre in our country, later re-evaluated not only in the summer edition but also in the winter one held in Orvieto. In this way, the role that jazz has played for other musical genres has been revised, and not only by classifying it as a restless and tormented genre.
Today the festival boasts several trips around the world including the United States, Australia, Serbia, South Africa, Japan, Brazil and Argentina.
